What inspired you to make this artwork? What did you do to prepare for expressing this idea?
My inspiration for this work came from still life figures which could be used to study form and shadow when drawing from life.
What are you trying to communicate in this artwork? What do you want the viewer to think about or feel when they look at this artwork? Does it communicate successfully? Why or why not?
The goal of this piece was to create a loose, flowing form through all the figures to create a sense of movement throughout the work. Despite the fact that all the figures were fake, I wanted to convey a sense of life, using rough line work and gestural shading.
What decisions did you make about media, composition, and the elements and principles of design to help convey your idea?
I used graphite pencil to help make loose, gestural lines that focused more on the form and general values than deeply rendered details. I put more emphasis on the top right and middle focal points of the piece, while leaving other figures less defined as they go down the page. I combined background imagery in the branches to lead the eye down the page, and then back up through the placement of the figures.
How will you evolve your concentration from what you learned in making this piece? Any new ideas emerging?
I can use the idea of rough sketches of characters placed around the page to create preplanning pieces form my character designs.
