My concentration focuses on merging character creation and setting development together to create a visual narrative. I focused separately on character design and conveying personality then later setting and creating a central mood to the location. When combining them together I could create a narrative of how the characters interacted within the enviornment.
In creating my concentration, I utilized techniques commonly found in storyboarding and concept art to convey charaters and settings through images alone. When creating my character designs, I focused heavily on what shapes made up the base of the character. Sharp, straight lines and angles versus soft curves and circular forms give a feeling of active and inactive respectively, which I used in conjunction with pose, expression, and color to give personality to my characters. The first character’s base form consists of more contrasting angles and angular shapes, with her facial features more triangular in comparison to the other characters to give her a more active personality. The second character uses mainly circles as her body to give her a more laid-back and relaxed personality, with the third containing a mixture of both curves and lines to indicate a middle ground between the two. In the setting focus pieces, I started by putting emphasis on focal areas by utilizing value and light, then slowly added color throughout to give a mood and integrate the characters. The first background-centric pieces utilize mainly light and value to create focal points, then slowly adding more color and detail throughout the concentration.
