What inspired you to make this artwork? What did you do to prepare for expressing this idea?
This piece was inspired in part by early ideas for characters and the development behind them, and part by creating a style for both figures and backgrounds that could work in between both. The early sketches for the character were inspired by pre-production art for various animated movies, and the background was inspired by settings in 2D cartoons.
What are you trying to communicate in this artwork? What do you want the viewer to think about or feel when they look at this artwork? Does it communicate successfully? Why or why not?
The purpose of this piece was mainly to indicate character personality through design and implied action , with a secondary purpose of creating a scenario based around a "snapshot" image similar to a movie frame.
What decisions did you make about media, composition, and the elements and principles of design to help convey your idea?
I chose color schemes early in the creation of the character in order to associate her with certain emotions and concepts; in this case, I chose mainly ocean colors to associate her with swimming, and a mainly green color palette as green in many animated works is tied to sneaky or conning characters. The background colors were selected to mirror and complement the figure.
How will you evolve your concentration from what you learned in making this piece? Any new ideas emerging?
The idea behind the character used in this piece has evolved into one of the main characters used throughout the concentration, although the current version more closely resembles the original sketches than the rendered piece.
